Screening and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

ABAI staffs a part-time licensed psychologist who specializes in diagnosing autism. Families who have insurance that requires a certification of diagnosis of autism in order to access funding for treatment can have their child diagnosed at ABAI. Our licensed psychologist will administer a standardized autism diagnostic instrument to your child. If they determine your child has autism they will provide you with a written certification of autism diagnosis. Please contact our office to schedule an appointment.

How is a Diagnosis of Autism made?

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is difficult. There is no medical test, like blood testing, to diagnose (ASD). Our licensed psychologist will look at your child’s developmental history and behavior to make a diagnosis. ASD can sometimes be detected as early as 18 months or even younger.

What Are The 3 Main Symptoms of Autism?

  1. 1. Social Skills: A child with ASD has a hard time interacting with others. Problems with social skills are some of the most common signs. They might want to have close relationships but not know how.
  2. 2. Communication: About 40% of kids with autism spectrum disorders don’t talk at all, and between 25% and 30% develop some language skills during infancy but then lose them later.
  3. 3. Patterns of Behavior: Children with ASD also act in ways that seem unusual or have interests that aren’t typical such as repetitive behaviors like hand-flapping, rocking, jumping, or twirling
